What is a non-qualified high deductible health plan (NQHDHP)?

A non-qualified high deductible health plan (NQHDHP) is a health insurance plan with lower premiums and higher deductibles than many traditional health plans. A NQHDHP is different than a QHDHP in that it does not require all covered medical expenses to apply toward an annual deductible. A NQHDHP may be structured with a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). You may not establish an HSA with a NQHDHP because it does not meet the IRS definition of a QHDHP.
