What happens when you begin using your healthcare account?

As with anything new, it takes time to become comfortable with your healthcare account. The first time you use your healthcare account it will feel “different” to you. There is more administrative work for you to consider when using a healthcare account. No longer will you just show your health insurance ID card and pay a co-pay. In most cases, you will also have a debit card or checkbook to access your healthcare account dollars to pay for medical services, and you will have to get used to reading an EOB to make sure that what you were charged for was what you received.

Make sure you understand the basic process of using medical services, receiving bills, understanding these bills, and making payments. Different accounts use different methods of withdrawal, including: paper claim form filing; debit cards; direct deposits, and checks. You will build healthcare account confidence as you incur claims and pay for medical services—it’s a natural evolution that happens over time.
