I am planning on joining a health club—what things should I consider?

Several factors go into deciding what’s right for you. Some key questions include:

  • Are staff certified and trained?
  • Are trainers available and what are their rates?
  • What hours are you open?
  • What do monthly fees include? How much are they?
  • Does the main area look clean? (Locker rooms, too?)
  • Is there enough equipment and a variety of apparatus to use?
  • Are classes offered? If so, which (and do they differentiate for levels)? Are there additional fees, or do I need additional equipment?
  • Will I commit and get to utilize this expense?

Coaches' Takeaway

There are several factors in considering what type of facility you should choose. As you will note above, there are a few questions you may want to to help you decide. It is always a good idea to have a good feeling after your first impression. Don’t be afraid to ask club employees questions and ask if you can speak with current members as well.
