How does each type of healthcare account make payment for my doctor’s bill?

CDHPs come in different shapes and sizes. Another way to become acquainted with the different kinds of CDHPs and how they compare to traditional plans is to demonstrate how a typical year of medical costs might look.

For example, if in one year, Jasmine has 1 physical, fills 4 prescriptions, and makes 6 trips to her physical therapist, what will her spending be when her healthcare account structure is a FSA, an HRA, or an HSA? What will her complete financial picture (premium and cost sharing) be with each? Will she have rollover funds at the end of the year, or will she incur out-of-pocket costs which her premium savings can help pay for? Compare the answers to these questions with the results she would see if she were on a traditional managed care plan. The table that follows is a compelling way to present these findings and help illustrate the power of a CDHP to change the way we look at healthcare and the value we receive from our health insurance plans.
