As an Employer when is the best time to re-evaluate my CDHP?

During the renewal consultation with your benefits advisor and/or your insurer, they should present you with plan design recommendations. If any changes are made to the benefit structure, the new plan design details should be communicated to all employees and, if possible, their adult family members. Call their attention to information regarding renewal rates, administrative changes, any modifications to administrative procedures (e.g., claim reimbursement), and any other information pertinent to their use of the plan. Generally, employees will be given 2 to 4 weeks during open enrollment to review their plan design choices before any of the changes take effect. There are administrative procedures to factor in, as well as the issuing of insurance identification cards, so allow enough time for all parties to review the terms and conditions of their plan options.

Knowing your statistics or obtaining information from your benefits advisor or insurer is an invaluable resource during your renewal period. Armed with actual statistics about your company’s CDHP, you’ll be prepared to discuss all of your renewal options with your benefits advisor or your insurer, and you’ll help your employees choose from the best possible solutions by allowing them to suggest options that are based on your plan’s specific performance. Take the time to prepare a renewal strategy with your benefits advisor and be open to any recommendations they suggest. Times change, your needs sometimes change, and the inherent flexibility of the CDHP is designed to keep up.

Coaches' Takeaway

CDHP evaluation is an on-going exercise and best conducted at least once per year during your renewal consultation with your benefits advisor or your insurer. During that meeting, they should present you with some plan design recommendations. If any changes are made to the benefit structure, the new plan design details should be communicated to all employees and, if possible, their adult family members. Times change, your needs sometimes change, and the inherent flexibility of the CDHP is designed to keep up.
